Allrighty... I forgot to mention the other way of writing group pieces that I've worked with. That is writing back and forth. So Ed and I plopped down in his apt and passed my notebook back and forth writing lines. It's like a group free write. Lots of fun. And it's a great way to play off of each other's ideas in an immediate fashion instead of having to do homework.
Though, I was having a hard time concentrating. So, as incentive, Ed told me that every time I finished a line or section, I could watch part of the new He-Man animated movie. I have never been so motivated in my life. I felt like Pavlov's dog or something. It came time for me to finish a line, we turned off He-Man, and suddenly I was flying with ideas. Tragically, we eventually ran out of He-Man footage. I became blocked.
Sad, I know. I am a dork. Hear me whimper.
So yeah, we passed the notebook back and forth and got about 2 pages worth of work. Now, we have to go through it and flesh out the ideas we wrote. It looks like in those 2 pages worth of material we have about 5 different group poems. Will the insanity never stop. Ha!
Yale, yale, yale. Now that was a blast. They had no idea what they were in for. I think one of the great dynamics Ed and I have is that he is the personable one and I am the idiot cousin you just don't know what to do. For example, Ed warms them up makes them feel like the audience knows him and that he's bringing them into his world and life. I think one of his strengths is his earnestness. One feels at ease listening to him. Me, I'm like "All work and no play makes Omar a dull boy" and such. Real wacko. so it's that push and pull that really makes them wonder what's going on. Can you dig it? Where as in real life, I'm the boy next door and Ed is Lecter. Kidding. I'm not the boy next door.
